Bhutan Highlights Tour- 10 Nights / 11 Days Destination Covered: Paro | Thimphu | Punakha | Bumthang | Gangtey Travel Date- November | December | January Day 01: Delhi – Paro By Flights and The Paro to Thimphu By Flights Today Early Morning, board flight to Paro Airport where our company representative welcome at Paro Airport and Drive to Thimphu Fly on the wings of Dragon to international airport in Paro, Bhutan. On a clear day, the panoramic views of the Himalaya are sensational, including Everest (if you are flying from Delhi and Kathmandu), but particularly exciting is the approach through the Bhutanese foothills and the landing, including a few steep turns to land at the tiny airstrip of Paro. On arrival in Paro you will be received by our team and drive to Thimphu by private vehicle. Depending on arrival time, we can proceed for city sightseeing or relax in the hotel. Visit interesting weekend market (Thu-Sun). Vegetable vendors from different pockets of the country come to sell their products. In the evening we will explore the city by walk or visit Tashichho Dzong, which houses throne room of His Majesty the King. Overnight in Thimphu, altitude 2400m Day 02: Thimphu Guided Tour In the morning, we will visit handmade paper mill, School of Arts and crafts (closed on Sundays, government holidays) where students learn 13 different arts used predominantly in Bhutan. We will also visit to enjoy archery match and national library before lunch. After lunch, drive pass by memorial chorten built in memory of the 3rd King. Visit Buddha viewpoint, Changangkha Lhakhang, the oldest temple in the valley, enclosure where national animal, Takin are kept and Zilukha Nunnery. Overnight in Thimphu Day 03: Thimphu to Punakha By Car Drive After breakfasts proceed to Punakha across Dochula pass (3,100m). The pass offers the most spectacular view over the greater eastern Himalayas including highest peak of Bhutan. En route make short excursion about an hour to the temple of divine madman, also well known as the temple of fertility. It is fascinating to walk through villages and the rice fields. Afternoon visit Wangdue Dzong, overlooking Punatsangchu River. Overnight in Punakha Day 4: Punakha Morning, short excursion to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyel Chorten. This Chorten is dedicated to our present crown prince and for the world peace. Hike will take you around 45 minutes each way. After lunch visit Punakha Dzong built by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel in 1638 and situated at the junction of Pho Chu and Mo Chu Rivers. Punakha the capital city of Bhutan till 1955 and still the Je Khenpo, the Chief of Abbot resides there during the winter season. Overnight stay in Punakha Day 05: Punakha to Bumthang After the breakfast, we will get ready for long drive to valley of white bird, the drive passes through Wangdue, Pelela, Trongsa and Yotongla. We will enjoy leg stretch walk at Pelela pass and stop over at Trongsa for lunch. After lunch, we will visit beautiful Trongsa Dzong and further continue our drive to Bumthang. We will stop at Yatha wool weaving center which is well known in the region for woolen products. Check in the hotel, have relaxing evening after our long drive. Overnight in Jakar, altitude 2650m Day 06 : Bumthang- Full Day sightseeing Morning after our leisurely breakfast, visit Jampay Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples built in the country. This is the home of the naked dance that is still performed annually. Visit Kurjey temple, the site where the royals were cremated. One can either walk cross the suspension bridge and visit the village of Parar and Tamshing on foot or drive there. End your day with a walk passing by the Swiss farm. Evening stroll in Jakar town and try some local pancake and noodles, special about the valley. Overnight in Jakar Day 07: Bumthang to Gangtey We will enjoy the freshness of morning breeze from Chamkhar river. After the breakfast, we will escape to valley of black necked cranes and rhododendron called Phobjikha, often called as Gantey too. We will retrace our drive crossing two highest passes Yotongla at 3400mand Pelela at 3300m pass before we enter into Phobjikha valley. Visit between May to Jun is greeted with beautiful rhododendrons and visit between Nov to Feb gives the chance to see the world rare bird black necked cranes. On arrival, we will visit Gangtey Gompa, the largest and the only monastery of the Nyingmapa sect in western Bhutan. Later in the evening we will take a beautiful gangtey trail which will take about 2 hours one way, walk not recommended for rainy days. Overnight in Phobjikha, altitude 2900m Day 08: Gangtey-Paro After Breakfast drive back to Paro, Lunch stop at Wandue, On arrival in Paro we will visit National Museum, the first of its kind which has a collection from natural history to religious paintings. Visit 17 century Paro Dzong (Fortress) on foot and continue walking through the oldest wooden bridge still in use. Evening stroll old Paro town and peep into some local handicraft stores or we will provide the options to enjoy other activities while in Paro. Overnight in Paro, altitude 2200mOvernight in Paro. Day 09: In Paro Take a day hike to the ‘Tiger’s Nest’, the sacred Taktshang monastery, and have lunch at the Taktshang cafeteria. On the way back you can visit Dumtse Lhakhang, a temple built by Thangthong Gyalpo, the iron bridge builder. Overnight in Paro Day 10: In Paro After breakfast, visit to Ta Dzong (national Museum), the best place to familiarize about Bhutanese religion, customs and traditional arts & crafts. Then walk down the trail to see Rinpung Dzong (the fortress of the heap of Jewels built in the 17thcentury), traditionally this is the office of district governor’s and the living place for monks. After lunch visit ruined Drukgyel Dzong, the place of historic war between Tibet and Bhutan in 17th century; Kyichu Lhakhang, built in 7th century during the reign of first Tibetan king. Continue with a visit to the golden Shwezigon Pagoda,first and prototype monument, which was built in Myanmar style in 1087. Then, visit to Gubyaukgyi, a cave temple @ Wetkyi-Inn Village which is well-known for its exquisite jataka mural paintings and the elegant Htilominlo Temple noted for its fine plaster carvings and glazed sandstone decorations. This afternoon begin with a visit to a traditional lacquer ware workshop where you can observe the production of one of Myanmar’s best-known handicrafts. Continue to Ananda Temple, an architectural masterpiece and one of Bagan’s most beautiful temples. Built in the early Mon-style, Ananda contains two unique Buddha images whose expressions seem to change depending on the distance from which the statue is viewed. From here, travel by horse cart for a tour passing Thatbyinnyu, the highest temple in Bagan, massive Dhammayangyi Temple, noted for its remarkable brickwork, and Sulamani Temple. Overnight stay at Amankora Punakha Day 4 : – Punakha Begin the day with a hike from Punakha Lodge through terraces of rice, chillies and cabbage to the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten a monument recently built by the Queen of Bhutan. Afterwards, drive back up the valley towards Khuruthang, passing Punthsho Pelri Palace and several other winter homes of the royal family before reaching the impressive Punakha Dzong. Day 5 : – Paro After descending from Dochu La Pass, the road will lead back up the dramatic Wang Chu and Paro Chu river valleys before crossing through Paro towards the north end of the valley. In the afternoon, stroll to the nearby ruins, visit some of the valleyoldest and holiest religious monuments or amble down Paro main street. Day 6 : – Paro The day starts with a visit to the National Museum, housed in the Ta Dzong watchtower. From the Dzong, cross Nyamai Zampa, a traditional cantilevered bridge, to reach the town temple built in 1525. Enjoy a Picturesque picnic or a visit to a traditional farmhouse for lunch with a local family. The afternoon brings a choice of excursions visitors interested in further immersion in Bhutan culture and religion must experience the Kyichu Lhakhang, Dumtse Lhakhang and the Drukgyel Dzong altar room. Hikers can follow a beautiful trail behind the lodge which passes Drukgyel Dzong and winds along the Paro Chhu, crossing a suspension bridge and ambling through terraced farmland and forests before looping back down the river to a second bridge and returning to the lodge. The 4-5 hrs return trek offers spectacular views of this sacred monastery perched on a cliff face almost 1,000m above the valley floor. The rest of the day can be spent browsing through shops in town, enjoying the spa or exploring the rich forests that rise behind the lodge.
